[XND] Vanilla-Friendly Animal Surgery Mod

Author of the [XND] Vanilla-Friendly Animal Surgery Mod: mlie

[XND] Vanilla-Friendly Animal Surgery Mod brings balanced, size-based prosthetics and organ surgery to animals without the “one size fits all” approach. It expands animal customization while staying closer to vanilla design philosophy.

– Replaced patches with assemblies; should now work on all animals similar to Animal Armor (Continued).
– Added the possibility to craft all animal body parts.
– Added ear implants.

[XND] Vanilla-Friendly Animal Surgery Features

This mod is designed for players who want animal surgery without oversized bionics fitting every creature equally.

Available Animal Parts

  • Dentures.
  • Peg legs.
  • Hearts, kidneys, lungs, and livers.
  • Simple prosthetic arms and legs.
  • Bionic arms, legs, and eyes.
  • Painstoppers.
  • Ear implants.

Dentures and peg legs are installed the same way as in vanilla colonist surgery.

Size-Based System

Larger animals receive stronger prosthetics than smaller ones. For example, a small bionic leg may deal 8 damage when installed frontally, while a large one may deal 15.

Size categories:

  • Tiny: Mature body size under 0.3 (e.g., chickens, squirrels).
  • Small: 0.3 to 0.7 (e.g., monkeys, alphabeavers).
  • Medium: 0.7 to 1.3 (e.g., boars, ostriches).
  • Large: 1.3 to 2.4 (e.g., muffalo, bears).
  • Huge: 2.4 or greater (e.g., rhinoceroses, thrumbos).

Balance and Acquisition

  • Animal organs and prostheses are trade-only.
  • You cannot harvest animals for organs.
  • Animal parts use separate trade categories and do not affect human part availability.
  • Surgery on animals grants only 5/16 of normal human surgery experience to prevent XP farming.

Compatibility notes

  • Not recommended with A Dog Said due to overlapping parts and balance conflicts.
  • Recommended with Animal Armor to maximize animal customization.
  • No compatibility patches for animal mods have been provided.
  • For modders: Plug your animals’ defNames into the appropriate XML patches. Vanilla references are available in Patches/Core.
