The Animal Armor Mod allows players to armor up animals in RimWorld by adding animal armor recipes dynamically based on body size. It includes three armor types with different protection values, costs and movement penalties, as well as several armor size categories for different animals.
Animal Armor Mod Features
The Animal Armor Mod replaces the old patch-based recipe system with C# code that dynamically adds armor recipes to all animals depending on body size. This allows the mod to work with all animals more broadly than the previous XML patch system.
Animal armor types
- Makeshift armor: The cheapest and lowest-tech armor type. It provides 30% sharp resistance and 10% blunt resistance, but reduces movement speed by 10%. It can be produced from steel or purchased from tribals and outlanders.
- Standard armor: A modern and well-rounded armor type. It provides 30% sharp resistance and 10% blunt resistance with no movement speed penalty. It can be produced from cloth, steel and a small amount of plasteel, or purchased from outlanders and orbital traders.
- Heavy armor: The strongest armor type. It provides 60% sharp resistance and 20% blunt resistance, but reduces movement speed by 20%. It can be produced from synthread, steel and plasteel, or purchased from outlanders and orbital traders.
Animal armor sizes
- Tiny: For animals with a full-grown body size below 0.3, such as squirrels and boomrats.
- Small: For animals with a full-grown body size of at least 0.3 but below 0.7, such as monkeys and foxes.
- Medium: For animals with a full-grown body size of at least 0.7 but below 1.3, such as dogs, boars and alpacas.
- Large: For animals with a full-grown body size of at least 1.3 but below 2.4, such as cougars, bears and muffalo.
- Huge: For animals with a full-grown body size of 2.4 or higher, such as thrumbos and elephants.
Animal armor must match the size of the animal. For example, tiny armor made for squirrels will not fit huge animals such as elephants.
Installing or removing armor requires medicine to anesthetize the animal and prevent resistance. Once the animal is anesthetized, installing armor cannot fail, regardless of the doctor’s skill or the quality of the medicine.
The Animal Armor Mod is powered by the Harmony Patch Library.
Compatibility notes
The Animal Armor Mod is compatible with the Vanilla-Friendly Animal Surgery Mod and the A Dog Said Mod.
The author recommends using the following mods alongside the Animal Armor Mod for a better experience:
- Vanilla-Friendly Animal Surgery Mod: Allows animals to receive painstoppers and bionics, making armored animals more effective in combat.
- Simple Plastic Mod: Allows synthread production, making it easier to establish a heavy armor production chain.
The following mods are listed as compatible with the Animal Armor Mod:
- GeneticRim Mod by SargBjornson.
- FFGermanShepherd Mod by forestfey.
Older compatibility notes mentioned that external compatibility patches could be needed for some modded animals. The current update notes state that armor recipes are now added dynamically to animals based on body size.
