The Random Research Mod adds a scenario option that randomizes research projects, with an optional blind research mode where you do not know what is being researched until enough progress has been made. It can stay active in your mod list without affecting normal non-random scenarios unless the scenario option is enabled.
Random Research Mod Features
- Randomizes research as a scenario option.
- Adds optional blind research, hiding the active project until a chosen progress threshold is reached.
- Research benches no longer show the current research project before it should be visible.
- Allows you to re-roll the current research project once it has been revealed.
- Lets canceled research be continued later.
- Checks normal research requirements, including whether the required bench is available.
- Warns you if a better research bench is needed.
- Allows research to be paused once the project is visible.
How to enable random research
When choosing a scenario:
- Click “Scenario Editor”.
- Enable “Edit mode”.
- Click “Add part”.
- Select “Random Research” from the list.
- To configure Blind Research, scroll down to Random Research and adjust “blind until progress”.
For balance, you may also want to enable “Research Speed” and increase it to compensate for the added randomness. To do this, use “Add Part: Stat Multiplier” and select “Research Speed” from the stat list.
Adding or removing Random Research mid-save
You can turn on Random Research Mod without starting a new game by using Development mode:
- Open the Options menu.
- Enable “Development Mode”.
- Press the “/” key to open the debug action list.
- Select “Make Research Random”, which should be last in the list.
The blind percentage can be set by editing the save file. Add “blindThreshold0.5/blindThreshold” after the line “defRandomResearch/def”.
Random Research can also be turned off from Development mode. This is required before safely removing Random Research Mod from your mod list.
If God Mode is enabled, these systems are disabled.
Compatibility notes
Random Research Mod supports ResearchTree by preventing queued research and hiding in-progress research when needed.
The ResearchTree GUI for re-rolling and continuing research is workable, though the cancel button may float where the queue would normally appear, and continuing canceled research may create two completion letters.
When troubleshooting the Random Research Mod:
- See if the error persists if you just have this mod and its requirements active.
- If not, try adding your other mods until it happens again.
- Always post your log using the Log Uploader.
- For best support, please use the Discord-channel for error-reporting.
- Do not report errors by making a discussion-thread, I get no notification of that.
- If you have the solution for a problem, please post it to the GitHub repository.
- Use RimSort to sort your mods.
