Rails and Roads of the Rim Mod is a continuation and expansion of Roads of the Rim Mod that lets you construct both roads and railways on the world map. It expands the original concept by adding buildable rail options intended to work alongside mods such as SRTS Trains Mod and Decorative Railway Props Mod.
Rails and Roads of the Rim Features
- World map construction: Create rail or road construction sites directly on the world map.
- Caravan-based building: Send caravans with skilled colonists, pack animals, and resources to build roads or rail tile by tile.
- Rail support: Adds buildable rail options alongside roads.
- Faster travel: High-tier roads improve movement speed compared to the base game, including existing roads if enabled in settings.
- Terrain mitigation: Rail and road types can cancel part or all of the movement penalties from biome, hills, swamps, and seasons.
- Impassable terrain support: Asphalt roads, glitter roads, and rail tunnels can be built through impassable terrain.
- Allied assistance: Allied factions can help build railways and roads.
- Upgradeable roads: Building a faster road over a slower one refunds part of the previous road’s cost when both use the same resource.
- World map planning: Plan routes from tile to tile, remove mistaken sections before finalizing, and monitor progress with a world map progress bar.
- Configurable costs: Construction costs can be adjusted in the mod settings.
Construction details
- Planning: Select a construction site, choose a rail or road type, and draw the route across neighboring tiles before finalizing it.
- Work requirements: Construction uses resources and colonists with Construction skill. Some rail and road types require a minimum share of workers with specific skill levels.
- Automatic progression: Once a leg is completed, the caravan automatically moves to the next one.
- Work limitations: Work stops if all colonists are downed, sleeping at night, or if the caravan is moving. Prisoners do not contribute work.
- Ordered construction: Rail and road legs must be built in the order they were placed.
Costs and resource rules
- Terrain modifiers: Total construction cost depends on both the selected road or rail type and terrain conditions such as elevation, hills, and swamps.
- Partial deliveries: You do not need to bring all resources in one caravan, but every required material type must be present.
- Upgrade discount: Upgrading an existing slower road refunds 30% of its cost when the old and new roads share the same resource type.
- Rail limitation: Railroads cannot be upgraded.
Movement impact
- Custom movement multipliers: Roads and rails use their own movement cost multipliers instead of only the base game’s values.
- Terrain cancellation: Some or all terrain penalties can be removed depending on the rail or road type.
- Rail movement role: Rails mainly serve an aesthetic role, with partial movement bonuses intended to reflect easier travel along tracks.
- Water crossings: Glitter roads, glitterrail, and railroad can be built over water.
- Ice limitations: Roads and rails cannot be built on ice sheet or sea ice.
Compatibility notes
- Rail overpasses: Rail overpasses should not be used over more than one tile of road or rail, as this does not render properly due to engine or mod limitations.
- ISR2G: The author notes that ISR2G was disabled because it caused too many bugs, although it was later added back in an update.
- Train mods: The rail portion is intended to be used alongside mods such as SRTS Trains Mod and Decorative Railway Props Mod.
- Feedback: Feedback is welcomed on Steam.
