Quantum Cooling Mod adds exhaustless cooling and heating technology to RimWorld, allowing colonies to control room temperature without venting heat outside. This unchanged version of the original mod includes prototype, small, and large quantum coolers, plus small and large quantum heaters unlocked through dedicated research.
Quantum Cooling Mod Features
Quantum Cooling Mod uses fictional Quantum Cooling technology to reduce entropy without displacing it, making it especially useful for cooling mountain bases without exhaust venting.
This version was uploaded unchanged on request. There is also a modified version called Quantum Cooling Redux Mod, though some players preferred the original behavior.
Research and construction
After researching “Air Conditioning”, Quantum Cooling Mod adds the “Quantum Prototype” research, which unlocks the very weak Prototype Quantum Cooler. It may struggle to maintain negative temperatures depending on room size, climate, and weather.
From there, the “Quantum Cooling” research unlocks the Small Quantum Cooler and Large Quantum Cooler, both found in the Temperature construction tab. The “Quantum Heating” research unlocks the Small Quantum Heater and Large Quantum Heater.
Cooler comparison
eps means Energy Per Second in RimWorld’s heat mechanics. The lower the Watts per EPS, the more efficient the cooler is.
- Default RimWorld cooler: Provides -21 eps at 200W, or 9.5W per eps. Costs 90 steel and 3 components. Requires Air Conditioning.
- Prototype Quantum Cooler: Provides -11 eps at 200W, or 18.2W per eps. Costs 75 steel, 100 silver, and 5 components. Requires Air Conditioning.
- Small Quantum Cooler: Provides -33 eps at 500W, or 15.2W per eps. Costs 10 plasteel, 200 silver, 50 gold, and 5 components. Requires Quantum Cooling.
- Large Quantum Cooler: Provides -190 eps at 2000W, or 10.5W per eps. Costs 75 plasteel, 500 silver, 50 gold, and 10 components. Requires Quantum Cooling.
To balance the lack of exhaust, Quantum Coolers are expensive and relatively inefficient. They become more efficient as their price increases, though the default RimWorld cooler remains more resource and energy efficient overall. Their main advantage is that they require less space and do not need exhaust management. In a well-insulated room, a non-prototype Quantum Cooler can easily reach temperatures close to absolute zero.
