Pawn Name Variety Mod

Author of the Pawn Name Variety Mod: mlie

Pawn Name Variety Mod makes pawn names more varied by breaking predefined RimWorld pawn names into first names, last names and nicknames, then adding those parts to the random name pools for thousands of new possible combinations.

Pawn Name Variety Mod Features

  • Prevents predefined backer pawns and Name in Game pawns from being generated randomly, unless they are added to the Preferred Player-Created Characters list.
  • Breaks predefined full names into first names, last names and nicknames.
  • Adds those names to the appropriate gender-specific random name pools.
  • Checks for duplicate names before adding them to the name pool.
  • Allows thousands of additional name combinations using names already present in RimWorld.

More details

RimWorld includes hundreds of predefined backer pawns created during the Kickstarter campaign, as well as thousands of full names added through the Name in Game option. Pawn Name Variety Mod prevents those predefined pawns from appearing as fixed characters and instead reuses their names as random name components.

This means randomly generated pawns can use many more combinations while still drawing from names already included in the game.

Extra features

If you add a name to the Preferred Player-Created Characters list in the RimWorld options menu, that character can still appear in the game. For example, characters like Ryoko “Onesan” Minese or Amelia “Engie” Flais can still show up if added to that list.

Side effects

Truly random pawns only have a small chance of getting a nickname. Since many pawns with nicknames normally come from predefined names, nicknames become rarer when using Pawn Name Variety Mod.

Compatibility notes

Pawn Name Variety Mod does not affect factions with their own naming conventions. In vanilla RimWorld, this includes tribal factions and the Empire from the Royalty DLC.

Modded factions that use standard name pools will be affected by Pawn Name Variety Mod. Modded factions with their own custom naming schemes will not be affected.

Pawn Name Variety Mod should work alongside other mods that add names to the name pool.
