Pawn Education Mod

Author of the Pawn Education Mod: mlie

The Pawn Education Mod allows pawns to educate each other through social interactions. Pawns can share skill experience based on passion, skill difference, and teacher expertise, with special bonuses when learning from a master.

Pawn Education Mod Features

The Pawn Education Mod adds teaching interactions between pawns. The higher the passion for the subject, the higher the odds of discussion and the more experience is shared. When the teacher has skill level 20, something special may happen.

Functionality specifics

Teaching interactions can only activate for skills that meet these conditions:

  • The teacher has passion for the skill.
  • The teacher and student have a skill difference of at least 2.
  • The skill is enabled for both the teacher and the student, and is not disabled by traits or missing body parts.

Activation rate is affected by the combined passion of the teacher and student, ranging from a minimum weight of 0.2 to a maximum weight of 0.8. For comparison, the default activation weight of the vanilla “chat” interaction, when the necessary conditions are met, is 0.8.

  • Teacher XP gain: 2 * (20 / difference in skill).
  • Student XP gain: 2 * difference in skill * 3.
  • Teacher burning passion bonus: 2x XP multiplier.
  • Student regular passion bonus: 2x XP multiplier.
  • Student burning passion bonus: 4x XP multiplier.
  • Master teacher bonus: 8x XP multiplier for the student when the teacher has skill level 20. This is not combined with other student XP modifiers.
  • Master lesson: If the teacher has skill level 20, there is a 5% chance of giving a master lesson, automatically increasing the student’s skill by 2 levels. If this activates, the student does not receive the other listed skill gains. The teacher still receives the same XP bonus.

Thoughts and moods

The Pawn Education Mod also affects thoughts, moods, and social opinions. Check the ThoughtsDef file for specific details on how social opinions are affected.

  • Passionate skill: Teaching or learning a passionate skill gives a +1 mood buff lasting 3 days, stacking up to 5 times.
  • Burning passionate skill: Teaching or learning a burning passionate skill gives a +3 mood buff lasting 3 days, stacking up to 5 times, with a 0.67x multiplier on each additional stack.
  • Learning from a master: Gives a +10 mood buff lasting 3 days, stacking up to 5 times, with a 0.5x multiplier on each additional stack.

Pawns with the Psychopath trait do not get social or mood boosts because they are Psychopaths. Pawns with the Too Smart trait also do not get social or mood boosts.

Configuration

Upon loading the Pawn Education Mod for the first time, a configuration file should be generated here:

C:\Users\{USER}\AppData\LocalLow\Ludeon Studios\RimWorld by Ludeon Studios\Config\PawnEducation.config

The values in this file can be edited and saved to change the parameters of the interaction algorithms. Setting values too high might cause errors. Some values are explicitly capped due to game engine limitations.

To edit opinion and mood gains from interactions, modify the Def files here:

{STEAM_INSTALL_LOCATION}\steamapps\workshop\content\294100\1729795429\Defs

Where {STEAM_INSTALL_LOCATION} is the location of the Steam partition containing RimWorld.

Compatibility notes

The Pawn Education Mod is savegame compatible and should not conflict with other mods.

The Pawn Education Mod has the Empty Play Log Mod built in to allow uninstalling. If you are subscribed to the Pawn Education Mod, you do not need the Empty Play Log Mod. Subscribing to both will cause the button to show up twice, but should not cause any other problems.

The Pawn Education Mod has no dependencies.

The Pawn Education Mod works well with Orion’s Hospitality Mod.

Available languages:

  • Russian.

The balance of activation odds and XP gain was not extensively tested, so feedback about balance or spelling errors in the log is welcome.

When troubleshooting the Pawn Education Mod:

  • See if the error persists if you just have this mod and its requirements active.
  • If not, try adding your other mods until it happens again.
  • Always post your log using the Log Uploader.
  • For best support, please use the Discord-channel for error-reporting.
  • Do not report errors by making a discussion-thread, I get no notification of that.
