NightVision Mod

Author of the NightVision Mod: mlie

NightVision Mod expands RimWorld’s light and darkness mechanics, making vision a meaningful combat and gameplay factor. Pawns no longer behave the same way in the dark: those with night vision excel in low light, photosensitive pawns thrive in darkness but suffer in bright conditions, and vanilla pawns retain their usual penalties. This mod deeply reworks movement, combat, AI behavior, and equipment interactions with light levels.

This is an update of drumad’s mod.
Goggles now only cover the eyes, based on a patch by Turambar.

NightVision Features

  • Adds Night Vision: no movement or work slowdown in darkness and no negative thoughts.
  • Adds Photosensitivity: faster movement and work in darkness, slower in very bright light, with corresponding mood effects.
  • Includes positive and negative thoughts tied to lighting conditions.
  • New apparel: night vision goggles, tinted goggles, and an advanced night vision helmet.
  • All apparel and implants are unlocked via vanilla research.

Bionics and implants

  • Adds night vision functionality to bionic eyes and similar implants.
  • Adds a new eye implant that grants photosensitivity, with its own research.
  • Effects scale with the number of eye implants installed.

Customization and modding support

  • Supports alien races, including adding natural photosensitivity to human-like races.
  • Fully customizable settings for headgear, allowing night vision on custom hats.
  • Customizable settings for bionics and eye-related health conditions.
  • Includes example patches for modders and XML customization.

Combat and AI changes (version 1.1)

  • Ranged and melee hit chance now depends on lighting and vision.
  • Ranged weapon cooldowns are affected by darkness and vision, scaling with shooting skill.
  • Melee dodge chance depends on the vision difference between attacker and target.
  • Chance for sneak attacks when the attacker has better vision than the target.
  • Enemies prefer darker cover when available.
  • Enemy aggro range changes based on lighting and their vision capabilities.
  • Adds a late-game night-time drop pod raid with melee specialists and night vision, triggered only during a solar flare.

All combat-related features can be individually disabled in the mod settings.

Lighting rules

  • Night vision: no penalties regardless of light level.
  • Photosensitive: 20% faster in darkness, 20% slower in very bright light.
  • Default: 20% slower in darkness, matching vanilla behavior.

Darkness is defined as 30% light or less, while bright light is defined as 70% light or more. Effects scale smoothly toward 0% and 100% light levels.

Compatibility notes

  • Fully compatible with alien race mods.
  • Does not alter surgery success chance from lighting, as this is tied to beds in vanilla.
  • Mid-save compatible.
