Hunting Restriction Mod

Author of the Hunting Restriction Mod: mlie

The Hunting Restriction Mod makes hunters consider current conditions before and during hunting, helping them avoid dangerous, inefficient, or mood-damaging hunting jobs. It also adjusts the distance hunters keep from targets depending on the weapon, weather, animal state, and other factors.

Hunting Restriction Mod Features

The Hunting Restriction Mod changes how hunters decide whether a target is worth hunting. If a hunt would be too dangerous, inefficient, or harmful to the pawn’s mood, the hunter may skip the target or the hunting job entirely. The reason will be shown in the right-click menu.

Hunting decision factors

  • Toxic fallout.
  • Distance to target.
  • Target size.
  • Whether the target is a predator.
  • Whether the target is sleeping.
  • Hunter food and rest needs.
  • Hunter movement efficiency.
  • Hunter eyesight.
  • Outdoor temperature.
  • Current edible nutrition stock.

If food stocks are low, hunters will ignore their own needs in favor of increasing the colony’s food supply.

Hunters with sight below 55% will not hunt, even if assigned to hunting.

Hunting distance behavior

The Hunting Restriction Mod makes hunters choose a shooting range that better suits their equipped weapon, instead of using an arbitrary percentage of the weapon’s maximum range.

  • Explosive targets: If the target is not downed and would explode on death, the hunter may add up to four extra tiles of safety range to account for the target moving toward them.
  • Weather: Bad weather, especially fog, reduces the distance hunters try to maintain.
  • Trigger Happy trait: Hunters with this trait will keep a slightly shorter distance.
  • Sleeping targets: If the target is asleep, the hunter will move to the same close range used for downed animals.

Mod options

  • Move in close on sleeping animals: Allows control over the behavior where hunters move closer to sleeping animals.
  • Haul hunting targets that explode: Disabled by default. When disabled, another pawn must put out the fire around and on a boomalope or boomrat corpse before it can be collected. When enabled, hunters behave like vanilla and may catch fire while retrieving the kill.
  • Melee hunting: Enables melee hunting for different sizes of game, including big, medium, or small animals.
  • Predator hunting: Allows hunting predators, disabled by default.

Your hunter’s fight or flee setting still applies when a hunted animal fights back.

Compatibility notes
