Brrr and Phew Mod adds configurable “common sense” colony AI so pawns (and optionally animals) react earlier to hypothermia, heatstroke, toxic buildup, and cabin fever, helping you prevent severe conditions before they hit dangerous thresholds.
Brrr and Phew Features
Early response to temperature conditions
The vanilla game typically reacts to hypothermia and heatstroke only once pawns reach the initial injury stage (around 35% buildup). Brrr and Phew Mod lets you configure an earlier response threshold (between 10% and 30%), so pawns take preventative action before things get severe.
When triggered, pawns will seek a safe, comfortable-temperature spot to recover:
- Their owned bed.
- An unoccupied bed if they do not have one.
- The floor of a suitable room if no bed is available.
They will rest (and may sleep) until recovered, then resume normal activities. This recovery is usually shorter than a full sleep cycle.
“Yuk” for toxic buildup
“Yuk” helps pawns avoid the effects of toxic buildup by initiating recovery earlier (with slightly lower safety thresholds, since toxic buildup can be dangerous sooner and may take longer to recover from).
“Ooh” for cabin fever
“Ooh” allows pawns suffering from cabin fever to take a forced break, typically:
- Wander outside.
- Sky watching.
Joy gained is reduced (50% rate), but it helps pawns continue the activity long enough to better satisfy the outdoors need (aiming for up to 75% fulfillment when possible). Activities still have their own limits/expiration, so full fulfillment is not guaranteed.
“Ooh” also ignores area restrictions, but you can still interrupt by drafting the pawn. If you need to cancel it temporarily, adjust settings or restrict outdoor access and use drafting to break the current action.
“Ooh” will not trigger if it conflicts with other enabled condition responses, but pawns may still briefly go outside for respite when another trigger applies. Since “Ooh” is itself a joy activity, additional joy interruptions are not relevant while it is active.
Food and joy interruptions during recovery
Brrr and Phew Mod can optionally allow food and joy needs to temporarily interrupt recovery, staggering the process based on what the pawn needs. This is more useful for long recovery conditions (not relevant to “Ooh”), but may allow occasional brief outdoor activity depending on your settings.
Animals supported
Colony animals can mirror relevant reactions (“Brrr”, “Phew”, and “Yuk”) if enabled. Ensure their allowed areas/pathing include a safe retreat location. If an animal is trained in obedience and set to follow a master, that may override its response.
Mod options
- Enable/disable AI behavior per condition.
- Set the recovery initiation threshold for each condition.
- Configure whether joy activities are allowed during recovery and at what level (not relevant to “Ooh”).
- Enable/disable mirrored animal behavior.
Extra behavior updates
- If using Odyssey DLC, the Gasp reaction will now make pawns seek shelter from Vacuum exposure.
Compatibility notes
- Safe to add or remove from save games (uses only thought and job behavior).
- Does not use mental breaks, so it is compatible with psychology-related mods.
- “Gasp” provides similar support to “Yuk” as a common sense reaction for the More Events Mod Heavy Air event.
- Multiplayer support: Beta.
- Available translations: Chinese (Simplified), German.
